WHAT IS INTERACTIVE METRONOME?
The Interactive Metronome (IM) is a computer based training program designed to improve timing, attention, and coordination in children and adults with a wide range of cognitive and physical difficulties including Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD). As an assessment and training tool, IM provides a non-invasive way to stimulate learning and development.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM IT?
IM may benefit children as well as adults who have trouble with motor control/coordination, paying attention, and learning. Patients with conditions such as ADD, ADHD, learning disabilities, TBI, CVA, Parkinson's, and autism may also benefit. As with any intervention, the varying degrees of severity affect the immediacy of the outcome. As long as the patient is able to perform repetitive limb movements, positive results from IM training should be seen over time.
CAN THE IM BE USED WITH ALL AGES?
Yes, IM's adaptive design can be used with a broad spectrum of clients as long as they are developmentally 6 years of age or older. IM providers have trained individuals from pediatric to geriatric.
WHAT IS THE TRAINING COMMITMENT?
Typically, IM training requires a minimum of 12 to 15 one hour sessions, conducted over a period of 3 to 5 weeks. The optimum training frequency is 3 to 5 times per week. Training less than 3 times per week may not produce desired results. The first few training sessions may last over one hour. IM training should be viewed as light exercise. When doing IM training, the trainee should wear clothes that will not interfere. Excessively loose clothing may snag the triggers, and pockets should be empty. NO high heels or clunky shoes should be worn.
Scores are measured in fractions of a second ranging from 0 to 500 milliseconds. The lower the score, the more accurate the performance.
IM PROGRAM RESULTS
If you or your child completed the full training program and his/her scores improved then you may expect to see benefits in the following fundamental capacities:
*Focus/Concentration short and long term
*Timing-the planning and sequencing necessary for coordination and thinking skills.
Improvements to these fundamental capacities may impact performance in areas of academics, performing arts, athletic endeavors, and occupational or daily living activities.
Each person is unique and will respond to IM training in a different way. Some students notice immediate benefits while others may not display changes for several weeks after training is completed. You, your child, and others involved with your child, such as teachers, may notice the following reported observable behaviors:
*Better eye contact
*More initiative conversation
*Faster and more accurate completion of tasks (homework and chores)
*Better flow from thought to verbalization
*Increased accuracy in sports
*Better able to follow directions
*Increased interest in school and other pursuits
*More restful sleep
IMPROVEMENTS IN ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE ALONE INCLUDE:
*Over 1.5 grade level increase in reading fluency
*Over 1.5 grade level increase in math fluency
*Over 2.0 grade level increase in processing speed
*Over 60% of students in one class experienced an improvement in GPA
*Improved scores on standardized testing (SAT)
